Project Description
Structura served as the structural engineer of record for the Landmark Mall redevelopment in Alexandria, VA, providing structural modifications and enhancements to the existing three-level parking garage. Located near Duke Street and I-395, this redevelopment is part of a larger plan to transform the site into a vibrant hub with a new hospital, cancer center, and mixed-use spaces totaling over 1 million GSF, developed by Foulger Pratt and Inova.
Project scope involved optimizing and retrofitting the existing precast concrete structure, which was originally designed to accommodate 2,950 vehicles, to meet the needs of the new medical and residential developments planned for the site. This involved comprehensive analysis and adjustments to ensure the garage could support the increased demands of the expanded development while maintaining structural integrity.
The engineering team worked to modify the garage’s structural components, including redesigning certain sections of the precast concrete framing and reinforcing key areas to integrate seamlessly with the new mixed-use infrastructure. Structura also addressed logistical challenges associated with the ongoing construction of adjacent buildings, ensuring that the garage’s structural enhancements were completed efficiently and within the broader project timeline. Through careful planning and execution, Structura’s solutions facilitated the transformation of the garage into a modern, integrated asset that supports the future growth of the site.
