Project Description
Structura collaborated with Peterson Associates and Robins & Morton on the design and construction of a three-story, 60K SF office building, originally planned as a four-story structure with a penthouse. The building’s open floor plan and perimeter windows led to the decision to utilize moment frames for lateral stability. To reduce steel tonnage—approximately 350 tons—and eliminate field welding, Structura recommended the use of bolted SidePlate® moment connections, which also saved significant erection time.
Throughout the design phase, the structural model was shared multiple times with the detailer, allowing for near-completion of the detailing by the time the scope shifted to a three-story building. Instead of conventional shop drawings, a structural BIM takeoff, including materials for SidePlate and base plates, was provided for fabricator bids. CM Steel was selected, and within a week, shop and fabrication preferences were reviewed. The final package was delivered only six weeks after the notice to proceed, significantly reducing the timeline compared to traditional methods. This collaborative process resulted in zero RFIs related to structural steel, and a stair detail discrepancy was resolved within two days, demonstrating a streamlined, efficient project workflow.
"This was by far the best experience I have had in a long time. [The elimination of the RFI process] saved a tremendous amount of time." – Greg Sain, Project Manager (CM Steel)
