Structura was proud to serve as the structural engineer of record for the Cone Health Women’s Center Reinventing Care – Clinical Reconfiguration project, which involved integrating an existing facility from another campus into a new location. This ambitious project featured a six-story addition to the existing hospital, spanning approximately 185K SF, and included significant structural modifications to support its complex integration.

The structural design employed a conventionally reinforced concrete flat plate system and concrete shear walls, ensuring both stability and efficiency for the expanded hospital. A key challenge was the relocation of existing utilities beneath the new footprint, which required careful planning and coordination to minimize disruption to the ongoing hospital operations.

Initially conceived as an RFP, the project transitioned to an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, with 11 stakeholders, including the owner, architects, engineers, general contractor, and key subcontractors, all sharing the risk to meet a target cost capped at $98M. Structura’s collaborative approach within this framework ensured a seamless execution of the project, meeting both structural and operational goals within the budget constraints.
