Project Description
Founded in 1887 by U.S. Catholic bishops with the support of Pope Leo XIII, Catholic University of America is the national university of the Catholic Church in Washington, DC. In the wake of the 2011 Mineral, VA earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks, several of the university’s historic buildings sustained varying degrees of damage.
Structura was engaged to assess the structural integrity of 28 buildings on campus, dating from 1888 to 1958. The extent of damage varied across the structures, reflecting differences in original construction methods and materials. Structura’s team provided expert structural engineering services to design repairs for the most severely damaged buildings, including Caldwell Hall, McMahon Hall, the John K. Mullen Library, and the Hartke Theater. Additionally, Structura supported various renovations across the campus, ensuring the safety, preservation, and continued functionality of these important historic buildings.
