Project Description
The Sanctuary, a former Gothic Revival church in the Capitol Hill Historic District, was adaptively preserved and repurposed into luxury residences. Structura collaborated with Bonstra | Haresign to transform this iconic structure into 30 unique condominiums, spread across approximately 35,000 square feet, including the original church and two adjacent townhouses.
Structura’s work involved meticulous restoration and adaptive reuse of the building’s historic elements. We carefully engineered the structural framework to support the transformation of purpose-built religious spaces into high-end residences. The original church framing, including the first and second-floor framing, was retained, while the top floor’s uniquely shaped ceilings and an existing stairwell underwent complete restoration.
Our team also ensured the preservation and reassembly of the church's original stained and leaded glass windows, supplementing with historically accurate reproductions where needed. Structura's engineering expertise was key in preserving these critical elements while accommodating modern residential needs, allowing the design team to showcase distinctive features like exposed brick and cast-iron columns throughout the 30 one-of-a-kind condos. We're proud to have contributed to this project, breathing new life into a historic structure while maintaining its architectural heritage.
