Project Description
The 350-seat R. House is a vibrant food and gathering space that blends industrial character with community-focused design. Structura was proud to collaborate closely with PI.KL Studio to transform the former auto showroom and garage into a dynamic 50,000 SF food hall, emphasizing both structural integrity and modern functionality.
Project scope included evaluating and reinforcing the existing structure to support the new design, including the integration of roll-up garage doors, polished concrete floors, and wooden beams that pay homage to the building's automotive past. The team also designed structural modifications to accommodate the expansive open layout, high ceilings, and large, inviting windows that flood the space with natural light. Key structural elements included ensuring the stability of the central bar and food stalls, as well as reinforcing areas for flexible seating, play spaces for families, and creative touches like colorful sofas and planters.
These enhancements supported the vision of creating a welcoming community hub less than a mile from Johns Hopkins University in the Remington neighborhood. With a $12M investment and 10 diverse eateries, R. House is more than just a food market—it’s a cornerstone for economic development and a thriving space for connection, offering something for everyone, from families during the day to nightlife crowds in the evening.
