Project Description
As the structural engineer of record for the Moses Cone Hospital North Tower project, Structura played a pivotal role in the design and construction of the six-story, 225K SF addition to the hospital. The new tower expands the hospital’s patient care space with a structural system that includes conventionally reinforced poured-in-place concrete, utilizing beams and girders on column grids. One of Structura’s key contributions was the design of an expansive interstitial space above the operating room suite level, planned to accommodate future hybrid operating room (OR) flex spaces. The project also featured a roof with extensive penthouses and solar panels, integrated seamlessly with mechanical utility raceways to support the building’s operations and sustainability goals.
A major challenge of the project was the design of a six-story connector linking the new North Tower to the existing patient floors. Structura’s team engineered solutions for threading new columns through occupied spaces below, ensuring minimal disruption to hospital operations. Additionally, the design incorporated new foundations capable of handling both wind and seismic lateral loads. Significant modifications were made to the existing building structure at the interface, requiring careful coordination to ensure a secure and functional connection between the old and new construction.
