Project Description
Structura was honored to collaborate with Cooper Carry and the Alexandria Housing Development Corporation (AHDC) on the redevelopment of the Carpenter’s Shelter homeless facility in Alexandria, VA. This project involved the design and construction of a new mixed-use, multi-family residential building that provides 97 affordable housing units and a dedicated space for Carpenter’s Shelter operations.
Structura played a key role in engineering solutions to support the complex site conditions and diverse programmatic needs of the facility, with the new building featuring a below-grade parking garage with capacity for 100 vehicles and a first floor that accommodates shelter spaces, a residential lobby, and additional residential units. The upper floors (2 through 6) are fully dedicated to housing, encompassing around 115K SF of 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units.
Additionally, Structura worked to integrate thoughtful community-focused amenities, including a community room, three outdoor terraces, a 1,600 SF community garden, and a playground, bringing the total building area to 187K SF. Through innovative structural design, we ensured the building met both functional and aesthetic requirements, creating a welcoming and sustainable space for residents and the surrounding community.
