Project Description
In 2009, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Capitol Hill sought to update its aging facilities to meet current needs and accommodate future growth. Structura, as the Structural Engineer of Record, collaborated with Bonstra | Haresign on a comprehensive renovation project that involved both significant structural updates and thoughtful design.
Project scope included excavating and constructing a full basement beneath the existing Parish Hall, along with removing and replacing the entire first floor’s framing. Additionally, a new second-floor office space was constructed within the confines of the existing roof structure. Structura's role was essential in designing the structural systems required to support these significant alterations while preserving the integrity of the original building.
Our team developed innovative solutions to address challenges such as the excavation beneath an existing structure, ensuring the stability of the building during construction. We also ensured the new framing and second-floor offices were integrated seamlessly into the existing footprint. This renovation successfully modernized the church’s facilities, providing flexibility for current and future needs, and Structura’s engineering expertise was crucial in transforming St. Mark’s Episcopal Church into a more functional and adaptable space for the community.
