Project Description
Structura was pleased to collaborate with Studio //3877 on the design and buildout of Lucky Buns' newest location in Phase 2 of DC’s vibrant waterfront neighborhood, The Wharf. The restaurant, envisioned by Chef and co-owner Alex McCoy, blends a classic neighborhood bar with a modern burger joint vibe, drawing inspiration from ‘70s-era burger spots and dive bars.
As the structural engineer of record, Structura’s role was integral in transforming this first-generation space. Key elements of the scope of work included:
- Mechanical Platform: Designed a 300 SF platform, elevated 12 feet above finished floor, supported by non-suspended structural framing to accommodate the restaurant's mechanical needs
- Kitchen & MEP Equipment: Provided structural analysis and support for the installation of new kitchen and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems
- Aluminum Sliding Glass Wall: Added structural heading supports for a large aluminum sliding glass wall across the storefront, enabling seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces while enhancing waterfront views of DC's Washington Channel
- Outdoor Patio Structure: Designed and detailed a free-standing wood patio structure (46’L x 14’W) with polycarbonate panel roofing, creating a year-round al fresco dining experience for guests
Our expertise in structural design and coordination helped bring Chef McCoy’s vision to life, providing a safe, functional, and aesthetically appealing space that captures the essence of Lucky Buns’ bold and eclectic personality.
