Project Description
Structura served as the structural engineer of record for the new Hotel Indigo in historic Old Town Alexandria, working in collaboration with Rust | Orling. This upscale, 120-room hotel features a modern design with approximately 40 rooms offering stunning views of the Potomac River. The hotel also includes a casual yet refined restaurant, Hummingbird, along with convenient grab-and-go food options, including a bakery and sandwich shop.
Project scope focused on providing innovative and efficient structural solutions for the hotel’s design. The building's structural frame consists of deck-supported slabs on load-bearing light-gauge steel walls, which were designed to efficiently accommodate the hotel’s vertical loads. Additionally, a post-tensioned concrete podium was utilized for the building’s base, offering enhanced structural stability and resilience.
The below-grade levels were supported by mildly reinforced concrete slabs, designed to withstand the pressures of the surrounding earth while ensuring the safety and stability of the structure. Structura worked closely with the design team to optimize the building’s foundation system, addressing challenges related to the site’s unique conditions while maintaining a seamless integration between the structural elements and the overall architectural vision. Through careful planning and attention to detail, Structura's engineering solutions contributed to the successful realization of this vibrant, modern addition to Old Town Alexandria.
