Project Description
Structura served as the structural engineer of record for the conversion of an existing big-box retail building into the Heights Baptist Church facility in Richmond, VA. The project involved significant structural modifications, including façade updates with new storefronts, tower features, and canopies. Inside, Structura designed a new auditorium with 80-foot clear spans, removing up to six columns and implementing a new structural system.
Additionally, Structura provided design for a new framed roof structure over the vestibule and lobby, reinforcing the roof for new loading conditions, snow drift, and rooftop mechanical units. The auditorium featured stadium-style seating with concrete slabs and light-gauge framing. External updates included EIFS or composite panels, window openings, and parapet framing. Structura also performed lateral analysis, strengthening CMU walls, and designing new wall openings.
Field surveys and loading analysis were conducted on the mezzanine, with reinforcement provisions as needed. Structura’s engineering expertise ensured the successful transformation of the building into a modern church while meeting all structural and safety requirements.
