Project Description
Located along the historic C&O Canal in Washington, DC's Georgetown neighborhood, The Foundry is a six-story Class A, Energy Star-rated office building originally constructed in 1973. Structura was proud to collaborate with OTJ Architects to modernize and expand this iconic property through a comprehensive renovation and improvement project. Scope included structural analysis and design for a range of upgrades, including the transformation of the building’s lobby where partial demolition of the second floor created a dramatic two-story space to accommodate a new restaurant. Structura also designed structural modifications to the exterior wall, incorporating a striking two-story glass façade that wraps into the entry, enhancing street-level visibility and architectural presence.
Additional tasks included the removal of the existing internal stair from the lobby to the lower level, infilling the slab opening, and designing a new monumental stair in a relocated position. We provided expertise on the exterior curtain wall and windows, ensuring structural integrity during rework and upgrades. Furthermore, Structura addressed load capacity requirements and designed structural modifications to accommodate a new roof deck addition, along with necessary egress solutions for rooftop access. By leveraging innovative solutions and precise engineering, Structura helped reimagine The Foundry, blending historic charm with modern functionality and creating a space that aligns with Georgetown’s vibrant character and commercial appeal.
