Project Description
The Studio Theatre, located within the Greater 14th Street Historic District in two 1920s-era auto dealership buildings, underwent a significant renovation and expansion in 2001. This project involved a careful balance of preserving the historic integrity of the structures while accommodating modern needs. Structura was proud to collaborate with Bonstra | Haresign providing critical expertise throughout the renovation.
Our work included major structural modifications, such as the removal of existing concrete columns to create space for two new theater venues. We also engineered the structural integration of a new atrium, ensuring it complemented the existing facades while supporting the building’s new functionality. The final design features two 200-seat theaters, an updated entrance lobby with a box office, expanded administrative offices, costume and set design studios, and acting classrooms.
A standout feature of the renovation is the two-story, glass-encased atrium, which serves as the heart of the facility, connecting the original buildings and acting as a vibrant beacon for the street. Structura’s role was essential in making this transformation possible, ensuring both the preservation of the historic structures and the introduction of modern, flexible spaces.
