Project Description
Structura had the privilege of working with Torti Gallas + Partners on the transformative revitalization of the historic Grimke School in Washington, DC, originally built in 1887. This project was particularly meaningful, as it aimed to restore and adapt the building for modern use while preserving its rich history. The revitalized structure now serves as the corporate headquarters for Torti Gallas + Partners and as the home of the African American Civil War Museum.
Structura's role as the structural engineer of record involved a comprehensive scope of work, which included adaptive reuse of the existing school building and the addition of two new, adjacent stand-alone buildings. In the main building, we designed and detailed a 3-level addition at the rear to create a central atrium, housing a new elevator core to improve accessibility. Additionally, we worked on the structural design for Building B, a four-story, ~33K SF building that provides 25 residential units, and Building C, a six-story mixed-use development with street-level retail and five floors of residential units, spanning approximately 35K SF.
Altogether, the revitalized campus now includes approximately 133K SF of residential, commercial, cultural/arts, retail, and mixed-use spaces. Structura's work ensured the success of this innovative project, preserving the legacy of the Grimke School while creating a dynamic space that will serve generations to come.
