Structura was honored to serve as the structural engineer of record for the renovation of Broadway Market, a historic landmark in the heart of Fells Point, Baltimore. Established in 1786, the market underwent a $3M renovation in 2019 after nearly a decade of closure. The project encompassed the restoration and modernization of two separate shed buildings, which now feature various food retail options and are managed by the Baltimore Public Markets Corporation.

Working closely with PI.KL Studio, Structura updated this 200+ year-old market to better serve the community and local businesses. The renovation preserved the market’s historical integrity while introducing a flexible, adaptive design. A notable feature was the “black box” concept, which involved inserting a transparent glass layer between the original brick façade and the new structure. This design both honors the market’s historic wood shed framework and provides a contemporary, adaptable space that can evolve with the community over time. The project successfully balanced the need for modernization with respect for the building’s rich history.
