Project Description
Structura was honored to serve as the structural engineer for Atrium Lofts, a transformative project located at 17th and Marshall Streets in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood. The development, which occupies the former Richmond Cold Storage Company building, blends luxurious yet affordable living with the area's rich history. Working closely with SWA Construction and subcontractors, Structura developed detailed restoration strategies for the severely deteriorated building.
Key elements of the structural work included significant repairs to the building’s framework, ensuring the proper stabilization and securing of the original façade. Structura designed and implemented new mezzanine levels within the existing two-story spaces that once housed the building's cooling equipment. Additionally, Structura led the restoration of a pedestrian bridge connecting two buildings, designing new slide-bearing end connections to allow for independent movement between the structures. The project also involved cutting openings in existing floors to accommodate proper vertical circulation, ensuring the building met modern safety and accessibility standards while preserving its historic character.
