Project Description
Structura had the privilege of serving as the structural engineer of record for the 2016 renovation of the Baltimore Visitors Center, located at the water’s edge of the Inner Harbor. The renovation aimed to enhance the facility’s ability to serve over 400,000 daily visitors, incorporating modern technology and a flexible layout to host after-hours events. A key feature of the design was a suspended artwork focal point—“Seagrass,” a sculpture by local artists McCormack and Figg.
Structura worked closely with the artists to engineer the installation, ensuring the structural integrity of the suspended artwork while supporting custom lighting and animation sequences. The sculpture, designed to evoke the aquatic grasses of the nearby Chesapeake Bay, also incorporated dynamic lighting that adapts to holiday colors and team spirit for local events, such as Orioles and Ravens games.
