Project Description
When a new public park was slated for development on the historic former Washington Canal site just steps from Nationals Park at 2nd and M Streets SE in Washington, DC's Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, Structura was thrilled to partner with sculptor David Hess to execute the installation of his commissioned large-scale installations once more. Project scope included providing structural support for the installation of three stainless steel interactive sculptural elements located on each of the three blocks of Canal Park, and a high level of structural design precision was required to stabilize the tall, heavy steel pipes. In addition to the height, several pieces were skewed and arranged in circular and other off-balance patterns, making precise connections to their foundations critical to ensure public safety.
Washington Canal Park transformed an abandoned and contaminated bus parking lot into a sustainable green neighborhood gathering place and destination for the entire city. The title, "Waterline", speaks to the historic presence of water that once flowed through the canal which was used to build the Nation’s Capital, and the park itself features a LEED Gold-certified pavilion with geothermal heating and cooling, vegetated roof surfaces, water reuse systems, and energy/water monitoring dashboard systems as well as electric car charging stations and bicycle parking racks. Structura was proud to collaborate on bringing new life to this storied spot of DC's history.
