Project Description
Structura was privileged to collaborate with renowned public artist Ray King on the realization of The Flame, a striking tensile sculpture that graces the entrance of The Regent at 950 N Glebe Road in Arlington, VA. Positioned at the bustling intersection of Glebe Road and Route 66 in the vibrant Ballston Market neighborhood, this 30-foot-tall, flame-shaped structure is composed of holographic glass panels and stainless steel pipes arranged in an intricate series of graduated octahedron patterns with an accelerated helical twist. The sculpture serves as a dynamic beacon, reflecting the modern energy of the mixed-use commercial building it adorns.
Structura’s expertise was integral to bringing this ambitious design to life, with our team developing structural support systems to safely and elegantly integrate the 30'H sculpture with its 10'W angular reinforced concrete pedestal. The base design included a traditional spread footing; however, due to the challenges posed by nearby underground utilities and an adjacent below-grade parking structure, we incorporated helical pile supports to ensure stability without compromising existing infrastructure.
Structura worked closely with the artist and project team to address the unique engineering challenges posed by the sculpture's complex geometry and materials, ensuring both aesthetic precision and structural integrity. The Flame is not only a functional and structural achievement but also a symbol of innovation and artistry, seamlessly blending public art with urban architecture.
