When plans went in motion to redevelop Washington, DC's remaining southwest waterfront stretch as Buzzard Point, with Audi Field serving as DC United Soccer Club's newest home stadium across from Nationals Park, PEPCO quickly opened their new Waterfront Substation to better support the rapidly growing community and commissioned Hess Industries to design a sculpture on the building's prominent southeast corner (First & R Street SW). Designed and fabricated off-site by David and Eli Hess, "Flash Point" pays homage to Nikola Tesla and his high-voltage electricity experiments, featuring programmable LED light fixtures in the balls and towers to make the sculpture flash at night. It illuminates the importance of its surrounding backdrop with simulated electricity to represent a spark for the neighborhood as it continues to build and Structura was honored to consult on the installation of this standout neighborhood beacon.
